Find Out Why Your Child Could Possibly Experience A Drop In His Or Her Maths Grade In P5…Even If He Or She Scored 90+ Marks At The P4 SA2 Maths Exam!
Dear Parent,
Although you and your child deserve to take a short break during this June hoilday, I feel that it’s my duty as an educator to let you know something important at this juncture, before it’s too late!
You may reckon that it’s not a big deal since it’s not his or her PSLE year yet, it actually IS a big deal!
The P5 is the crucial transition period between P4 and P6, hence the jump from P4 to P5 will be huge, in order for your child to quickly get a sneak peek into what he or she can expect in PSLE.
This means that your child will not only be faced with entirely new topics and concepts – they’ll also have to solve more challenging questions based on previously-taught topics, thus developing their higher order thinking skills.
Year after year in my line of work, I’ve seen many parents and students getting caught off-guard by this huge jump. Even if the student scored more than 90 marks for SA2 Maths in P4. If your child scored less than that, then it’ll probably be an even bigger struggle!
That’s because most students making this transition don’t know how to manage the sudden immense pressure placed on them, and find themselves struggling to keep up.
That’s when parents finally “wake up” and frantically enroll their children for P5 Maths tuition, in the hope that the intensive cram sessions will solve this issue.
But due to the extensive unpreparedness that has been going on for some time, their children will often find it unhelpful.
The worst part is: since they would likely have experienced a drop in Maths grade in P5 (even if they scored 90+ for Maths in P4), they’ll tend to feel demoralised, and thus start to have a negative attitude towards learning new topics and concepts.
And that’s how it probably all goes downhill from here!
(Yes, this scenario is highly possible even if you reckon that your child’s excellent Maths grade would naturally carry on to P5 and P6!)
Now, dear parent, I didn’t write all these to scare you. No, that’s certainly not my intention at all!
However, as I’ve seen parents and their children falling into this trap time and time again, I really want to help you realise the importance of your child’s impending P5 year.
One key hurdle that has caused so many students to struggle to pass their Maths exam in P5, despite their 90+ score in P4 is this: their range of mathematical heuristics techniques is limited, as up till P4, they mainly focus on drawing models.
While the model drawing technique works very well to solve most word problems in P4, it’ll become much less effective in P5.
Reason being: although students can still use models to solve word problems involving fractions in P5, it’s almost impossible to do so for the rest of the questions, since they often involve large numbers and complicated intermediate steps.
Hence, P5 students must master a wider range of mathematical heuristics techniques, in order to equip them with the critical problem-solving tools required to solve Maths problems more efficiently and effectively at this new level!
And if they don’t (which unfortunately has happened in many cases), they’ll be in for a not-so-pleasant surprise once they face the more challenging Maths questions in their first P5 exam!
In Maths, P6 topics are typically extensions of P5 topics. Hence, it’s crucial that your child establishes a firm foundation in P5, from the very beginning of next year!
This will ensure that your child can master the new and more challenging concepts as soon as possible, so that both their P5 and P6 years will be smooth sailing!
Moreover, with MOE placing more emphasis on mathematical heuristics in the P5 and P6 curriculum, you may find it difficult to offer the same help to your child as you previously did in his or her lower primary years.
As such, getting the right help for your child is even more important now than ever before, so as to ensure that your child continues to excel in his or her Maths learning journey!
As a responsible parent, I’m sure that you want to give your child the best head start over his or her peers, especially since you now know the challenges that lie ahead.
